Stand in the Gap Ministries
Mission/Purpose
Stand in the Gap shares with local churches a proven model that fosters transformation. We teach churches how to meet the need of congregants to have hands on, tangible, and accountable personal ministries. We help them learn how to love their neighbor (Matthew 22:39) and to look after the widows and orphans in their distress (James 1:27). These neighbors, these widows and orphans, these prisoners, these people . . . . they are a part of our Spiritual Family.
Who is Our Neighbor?
We believe we are all poor. Poverty is defined as lack. We believe there are many kinds of poverty.
To put it simply, Stand in the Gap™ is about neighbors and families. Neighbors are those who have the courage to acknowledge the poverty in their lives and are willing to ask for and receive help. That ‘poverty’ may take many forms, including addictions, divorce, job loss, death of a loved one, bankruptcy, loneliness, or other issues of change, lack, or loss.
How Stand in the Gap™ Works
- Church leaders review the Stand in the Gap™ approach to life transformation and decide to implement it. Click here to see how your Church can get involved?
- Six to ten Christians volunteer to form a ‘spiritual family.’
- A ‘neighbor’ in need of long-term help requests assistance – and, after screening, the ‘family’ and ‘neighbor’ agree to meet together for at least a year.
- The complete ‘family’ is trained in Stand in the Gap™ methods and commits to embrace the program.
- Praying for each other – asking God’s direction
- Caring and providing a healthy family environment
- Watching for God’s answer to prayer
- Even though the ‘neighbor’ may experience severe life problems, the load is not too heavy, since six to ten people (and all their resources) provide support.
One of our Spiritual Family members, John Owen, summarized it this way,
"SITG offers the best chance any Christian has to live his life in a Christ-like manner. The only power is the love of Jesus - all you can give is yourself."
